Christy Kinard

From my Charleston studio, I create mixed-media paintings that have found their way into prestigious homes across America—from Palm Beach to Greenwich to Hilton Head. I’ve been featured at the Palm Beach Home Show, profiled in ARTnews and Vivant Magazine, and exhibited from Union Square in New York to galleries in London. Yet despite this international reach, I’ve chosen to stay in Charleston. This is where I create, where I draw inspiration, and where every single piece is made.

My latest achievement brings my work to an even broader audience: I recently won the commission for a major public art installation 16x28 ft of my painting Focused Precision at Hilton Head Airport. This piece will welcome thousands of visitors to the Lowcountry each week, serving as a vibrant introduction to the region’s creative spirit and natural beauty. It’s an honor to represent Charleston and the South in such a visible way, and it’s a testament to the power of staying true to your roots while reaching for bigger stages.

What truly defines me as a “Charleston Maker” is my process. Each painting is a construction project built from layers of paper, fabric, and memory before the first brushstroke touches the surface. I work with my hands, embedding textures and stories into the foundation. The result is art with physical depth and history—you can almost touch the layers of the South itself.

My work is about the beautiful, messy, and joyful chaos of life. I’m building these pieces the way Charleston itself was built: layer by layer, with intention and soul. I’ve been showing professionally since I was eighteen, and I’ve spent my entire career exploring what it means to capture the spirit of this place.

My subject matter is beautifully Southern. Bold, expressive florals dominate my work—not delicate watercolor botanicals, but powerful compositions I describe as “beauty that doesn’t behave.” Magnolias with attitude. Camellias with backbone. They reflect the strength I see in Southern women and the untamable spirit of the Lowcountry landscape.

I’ve been featured in designer showhouses from Atlanta to Cashiers, Charleston’s Junior League Centennial Gala, and included in 100 Southern Artists by Schiffer Publishing. But what I’m most proud of is maintaining an authentic voice. I haven’t chased trends or relocated to New York. I’ve stayed in Charleston, drawing from the gardens, the light, the history, and the complicated beauty of home.

Flowers are the central theme in my artwork, influenced by fresh bouquets in my childhood home. To me, they represent the boldness and strength of American women. I attempt to capture the joyful, layered character of the South, working from both childhood memories and life.

In a city celebrated for its makers—blacksmiths, furniture builders, artisans who create with their hands—I’m proof that a painter can be a maker too. I build my art the way Charleston’s craftsmen build their furniture: with care, tradition, and deep respect for materials and process. The difference is, my materials are memory and color, and my finished pieces don’t just furnish homes—they tell the story of where we come from.

I’m not just making art in Charleston. I’m making Charleston into art.
