August is here and with it our annual “Why We Love Charleston” issue—after all, by week seven of the summer swelter, we might need a little reminder. It’s also perfect timing for our annual “Images of Charleston” photo contest, which never fails to amaze me with sheer talent and creative perspectives. Every year, I’m reminded that while the city’s historic streets, beautiful beaches, marsh vistas, and wildlife may be familiar subjects, no two photographers see them quite the same way. The strongest images aren’t just beautiful; they tell a story, capture a fleeting moment, or reveal something the rest of us might have missed entirely.

As always, narrowing hundreds of submissions to a couple dozen finalists was no easy task. Our creative team spent hours sifting through them all, debating favorites, and championing overlooked gems. Now it’s your turn to weigh in. Turn to page 78 to see our picks, including our professional and amateur winners, then visit charlestonmag.com to vote for your favorite. You can cast one vote each day through August 19. The Readers’ Choice winner will be announced on August 20 and receive a $200 prize.

And because words have a way of capturing a place that photographs sometimes cannot, we’ve reprised our “Odes to the Lowcountry” (page 106). In these essays, local writers reflect on the people, places, and rituals that shape their relationships with Charleston, from the unspoken power of the boiled peanut to the elusive but intoxicating scent of tea olive. These love letters remind us that our affinity for this special corner of the world isn’t based on postcard views alone, but on experiences and memories accumulated over time.
