A Summer To Savor

Summer is almost here, and most everyone I know looks forward to it with the same childhood anticipation of the last day of school. It’s prime time for beach days, boat excursions, and cookouts with family and friends. And with America’s 250th anniversary on the horizon and Charleston serving as a lead city in the national commemoration, this season is shaping up to be even busier than usual.

To help you plan ahead for the many events and brush up on Charleston’s important role in the fight for liberty, we present “A Revolutionary Legacy” (page 112). Alongside a guide to all of the happenings—from fireworks and concerts to lectures, exhibitions, and conversations with noted historians—you’ll find the story of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, the unlikely but pivotal American victory over the British on June 28, 1776, that may have strengthened the founders’ resolve as they moved toward declaring independence. (Fun fact: July 4 marks the day the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence; it was not fully signed until August 1776.) You’ll also learn about the evolution of our state flag and the meaning behind Carolina Day—more than an old-school Charleston tradition, the annual ceremony reminds us of the sacrifices made for liberty and the ideals of our democracy.

Yes, there’s much to contemplate and celebrate this season, but summer in the Lowcountry also means laid-back days gathering with your favorite people. To up your grilling game, we asked top local chefs to share their favorite recipes. In “Fire & Flavor” (page 102), you’ll find expert tips and instruction for dishes like Chubby Fish chef James London’s mouthwatering spiced lamb ribs, pictured on our cover. Want a cold beer to wash it down? Check out “State of the Suds” (page 90), where frequent contributor Robert Moss tapped into the craft brewing scene, surveying how local breweries are navigating a new normal after pandemic pressures and shifting tastes, honing in on their products, and offering gathering spaces for all to enjoy.

Cookouts and cold drinks with friends? Sounds like a great summer to me!
